The Adoption Laws of Guyana are governed by the Adoption of Children Act Cap. 46:04 set out in The Laws of Guyana Revised Edition LRO 2012, Volume 9. Adoption of Children are managed under The Childcare and Protection Agency Act Cap. 46:07.

The former Adoption laws did not permit Guyanese living abroad to adopt children in Guyana. In 1997, an amendment sought to permit Guyanese living abroad to adopt.

Letter by Jamela A. Ali, published in the Stabroek News on the 21 August 2000 under the caption “Amendment to the Adoption Act is very badly drafted” and in the Guyana Chronicle on the 20 August 2000 under the caption “Guyanese living abroad cannot adopt children here”.

Reviews by clients who adopted in Guyana

"You’re really great Jamela, you go above and beyond. I can’t imagine how I would have done this adoption without you."

"Ms. Ali and her staff were instrumental in guiding my wife and I through an independent foreign adoption of a Guyanese orphaned sibling set. As neither my wife nor I are employed in the legal arena nor are knowledgeable about law in general and especially Guyanese adoption law in particular, we relied heavily on Ms. Ali and her team to aid us in our attempt to adopt these special orphaned children who we fell in love with and so very much wished to parent.  My wife and I cannot say enough words of praise about Ms. Ali and her team. They were thorough, professional, knowledgeable, and personal. They clearly mapped out the process and executed their responsibilities swiftly and efficiently dotting all “Is” and crossing all “Ts”. Not one iota was neglected. Ms. Ali personally responded to each and every one of our inquiries in a prompt manner. This level of service is rarely duplicated in any industry! Though we contracted business so far away geographically from Guyana, it honestly felt like we were living in Georgetown (Ms. Ali’s office headquarters) as all matters were addressed so swiftly. My wife and I would personally recommend Ms. Ali and her team’s legal services to anyone. Thanks to Ms. Ali and staff, we have a new daughter and son who are a definite treasure!
