GUYANA INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION INSTITUTE (GIAI)
WELCOME
Goal and purpose of GIAI
To sensitise about the process of Arbitration as an alternative to court litigation.
This has become relevant given that Guyana is now the fastest growing economy with the discovery of oil. The gigantic production of oil by Exon Mobil has led to a large presence of foreign investors and international business contracts which include arbitration clauses as a mechanism for resolving disputes.
The policy of the Government is to make Guyana a leading International Arbitration hub by establishing an Arbitration Institution. In this regard, Guyana has recently passed an Arbitration Act No. 6 of 2024. This is also in accordance with Guyana's obligation as a signatory to the New York Convention in 2014.
The Act caters for International and Domestic Arbitrations.
