MEDIATION IN GUYANA

Definition of Mediation and Mediator

"Mediation is the skill of a Mediator who is a person trained to act in a neutral role to assist parties with disputes to communicate with each other by listening and sharing ideas and to generate options in the mediation process conducted in private with the goal of the parties connecting and finding their own solutions to resolve the conflicts peacefully and making the world a better place". 2019 - Copyright

Appointment as Mediator

Jamela A. Ali was appointed as a Certified Mediator in 2003 by the Supreme Court of Guyana.

Mediation experience

Conducted more than 130 court connected and private mediations involving family members, Guyana and international Companies in matters concerning property disputes, mining law disputes, family law disputes, slander, religious disputes, monetary claims and damages.

Jamela provides mediation and negotiation services in the administraton of justice and the settlement of disputes. Her diverse background as a lawyer in litigation and mediation serves as a valuable resource to clients, providing unique and innovative insight in practicing litigation avoidance by strategising and negotiating.

Mediation Appointments

2024-2018 Founder and Director of Mediation Services International, a mediation service provider and a training institution.

10 July 2013 - Elected as Director of MIG* at its fourth Annual General Meeting.

6 June 2012 and 8 June 2011 - Elected as President of MIG (2 years term limit) at its second and third AGMs. During the first year as President, Jamela initiated and managed the successful holding of the first Mediation Conference with an international presenter and the Chancellor of Guyana.

24 May 2010 - Elected as Director to the Mediation Institute of Guyana Inc. (MIG) at its first Annual General Meeting.

17 June 2009 - Appointed as a Facilitator by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) to conduct a Public Consultation on the Draft Standard Specification for the Labelling of Retail Packages of Tobacco Products. See Kaieteur News 18 June 2009 Article.On the 30 June 2009, followed up as Facilitator/Chairperson at a Technical Committee of GNCB to arrive at a consensus.

28 October 2011 - delivered the Welcome Speech and another on "The Process of Mediation and the Benefits" at the Mediation Forum under the theme "Embracing the Potential of Mediation" hosted by MIG at Oceanview Hotel, Guyana.

30 June 2010 - delivered a speech on the “Benefits of Mediation and the Judicial Process in Guyana ” and also participated in a role play of a Mediation. 

1st April 2008 - speech promoting the benefits of Mediation and the Judicial/Legal process and gave examples of successful mediations at a symposium held at New Amsterdam, Berbice.

31 March 2008 - speech on Mediation and the Judicial/Legal process in Guyana and gave examples of successful mediations at a symposium held at the Suddie Supreme Court, Essequibo.

Mediation Training and Qualifications

Certificate in Mediator Skills Training

2003 - 24 hours course in Mediator Skills Training conducted by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana & the Carter Center of Atlanta, USA and received a Certificate. Trainers included Canadian, American and Caribbean Mediators, Mr. Richard J. Moore, President of MDR Associates Conflict Resolution Inc. Canada, Mr. Steven Weller of Policy Studies Inc., Colorado, USA and Ms. Deborah Mendez-Bowen of Trinidad.

Mediation Training Session

7 April 2004 - follow up training session for all mediators on the Court Roster conducted by Messrs. Steven Weller and Richard J. Moore.

Refresher Course in Mediation

29 -30 March 2006 - 2 day Refresher Course in Mediation held by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, the GBA and USAID-GDCCR to encourage the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation in Guyana. Conducted by Ms. Donna Parchment and Professor Britton from the University of Guyana (UG).

28 November 2007 - 1 December 2007 - 32 hours Advanced Mediation Training conducted by Mr. Richard J. Moore, LL.B., C. Symposium ADR and Mediation

27 March 2006 - two hour symposium held by the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana, GBA and USAID-GDCCR to encourage the use of ADR and Mediation in Guyana. Ms. Donna Parchment, an ADR Consultant and CEO, Dispute Resolution Foundation, Jamaica along with Mr. Paul Hinds gave an overview of Mediation.

Symposium in Essequibo

Conference - Dispute Resolution & Restorative Justice

9-12 July 2009 - American and Caribbean Law Initiative (ACLI) Conference on Dispute Resolution and Restorative Justice in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and received a Certificate of Participation.

Conference on Alternative Dispute Resolution

30 June 2010 - Public Forum on Alternative Dispute Resolution and delivered a speech on the “Benefits of Mediation and the Mediation Process in Guyana”. Also participated in a role play of a Mediation. The conference was held by the United Nations Association of Guyana (UNAG) and the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) and sponsored by USAID.
